Active research will start in order to define the best pumping conditions
for generating a strongly amplifying plasma that keeps the pulse duration
as short as 100 fs. The amplifier will be a plasma created by the interaction
of several IR laser pulses with a solid target.
Thanks to the large density
compared to gas target the output energy should be increased by a factor of
100-1.000 and the pulse duration reduced by a factor 10. The gain region homogeneity
will be a key parameter that will be studied by soft x-ray interferometry
or holography.
PALS has a ten years expertise on soft x-ray lasers using solid
target. The leader was the first to use a temporally shaped driving laser
for reducing the refraction sampled by the SXRL.
